A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such treatments should be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something that goes on and you become starving," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
