A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the national leader.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these national projects.
